A WA butcher can lay claim to Australia’s best lamb sausage after scooping the coveted award at the Sausage King National Finals in Adelaide.
Crimea Quality Meats, in the Perth suburb of Morley, claimed the accolade for its lamb fetta and chive entry at the Australian Meat Industry Council’s showcase national retail event at the weekend.
Crimea Quality Meats was also runner-up in the traditional Australian pork sausage category, with South Australia’s Barossa Fine Foods taking top spot.
Regional WA was well represented in the finals, with Donnybrook Butchers, Pete’s Chop Shop (Australind) and Quins Gourmet Butchers (Northam) all making the cut, however none took home an award.
Other WA finalists were Noranda Meats, East Victoria Park’s Swansea Street Family Butchers and Morley’s The Corner Butcher.
The Corner Butcher came second in the traditional Australian beef sausage category and third in the gourmet/open class sausage category.
Swansea Street Family Butchers and Noranda Meats came third in the best butcher’s beef burger and best butcher’s gourmet/open class burger categories respectively.
WA’s Riley Schofield took home $500 after being named runner-up apprentice of the year, with NSW’s Glenn Murphy claiming the win and $1000.
Finalists were selected after more than 30 regional and State competitions were held throughout 2022, followed by a series of State finals, with hundreds of independent butchers taking part.
AMIC retail general manager Stuart Fuller described the annual competition as “a fantastic celebration of the independent local butcher”.
“The finalists have all produced exceptional products,” he said.
“The butchers really know their trade and craft, and having strong community connections to their customers and a desire to make quality-tasting products highlights their passion and commitment to their businesses.”
Mr Fuller also praised the five apprentice of the year State finalists, who completed a practical assessment, theory exam and “mystery box challenge” over the two-day competition.
“Their love for the job, enthusiasm, drive, and willingness to listen and learn was wonderful to see,” he said.
