Remarkable Woman: Doctor Andrea Leonard

(WFXR) – The nomination was for stand-out women in the New River Valley and surrounding areas. Amanda Johnson knew just the woman Nexstar was looking for to be this year’s Remarkable Woman, detailing the accomplishments of her best friend, Doctor Andrea Leonard.

“That’s a big responsibility. I am proud to be her friend. I’m honored that she thinks of me that way,” shares Dr. Leonard.

Amanda thinks Dr. Leonard should win the top spot. She shared that Dr. Leonard recently received a doctoral degree from Liberty University while she was battling breast cancer, raising her newborn son with her husband, and launching a new business called Care Connect.

“Care Connect is a business that offers sponsored residential services to adults with disabilities and intellectual and developmental disabilities,” says Dr. Leonard.

Dr. Leonard licenses caregivers who want to take care of their loved ones inside of their homes. She also gives licenses to family providers who are still taking care of an adult child with a disability. Dr. Leonard is committed to serving individuals who otherwise would likely struggle to get the care they need.

“I worked in mental health a lot as a clinician, as a supervisor, a manager, and as director of an agency. I wanted to start my own agency and make it really family oriented and have meaningful deliberate growth,” Dr. Leonard adds. And the growth is quite obvious. Care Connect has four clients. “There’s a housing crisis for individuals with disabilities right now,” she says.

State medical officials and licensing agencies are asking her to provide more. They understand that Dr. Leonard unselfishly saw a need in her community and took a leap of faith to connect care to an underserved population.
