ICT watchdog the Communications Authority of Kenya has been undergoing some internal changes in terms of how it is led.
More than one year ago, the CA received a new Director General, Ezra Chiloba. Chiloba replace Mercy Wanjau, who had been doing the DG roles but in an interim position. She replaced Francis Wangusi whose tenure had come to an end.
Chiloba had previously served as IEBC CEO.
Wanjau has since been appointed as Secretary to the Cabinet in the Ruto Government.
Now, we have since learned that Gilbert Kibe has resigned as the Chairman of the CA.
Not long after his departure, President Ruto appointed businesswoman Mary Wambui Mungai as the Chair of the CA Board.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by section 6 (1) (a) of the Kenya Information and Communications Act, I, William Ruto, President and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces of the Republic of Kenya, appoint—Mary Wambui Mungai to be the Chairperson of the Board of Communications Authority of Kenya, for a period of three (3) years, with effect from the 2nd of December 2022. The appointment of Gilbert Kibe is revoked,” read a gazette notice announcing Kibe’s resignation.
Kibe is reportedly going to explore other interests.
“Due to personal interests that I wish to pursue, I hereby tender my resignation as chairman of the Board of Directors of the Communications Authority of Kenya with effect from 01 December 2022,” said Kibe.
It is going to be an interesting period following these managerial changes at the CA.
The CA is tasked with policing all matters related to ICT in Kenya.
Recently, we learned that one of its kitties, the Universal Service Fund, USF, might be used differently in the process of offering IT services to underserved and remote areas in Kenya.
It is also in the process of prepping a 5G framework, although telcos such as Safaricom have already rolled out the service commercially.
