For many Australian avocado lovers, this time of year is a difficult one – mourning the temporary loss of the Hass avocado.
Radio host Abbie Chatfield, 26, has had a rant on her show about why she thinks Hass avocados reign supreme, calling for the Shepard variety to be “discontinued”.

Since the segment on Tuesday, fans have been backing their preferred choice, with many believing “Shepards must go”.
“Shepard avocados, they take forever to ripen, and when they do ripen they’re still hard,” Abbie began on Hit Network’s Hot Nights With Abbie.
“They taste like plastic, they’re yellow in colour, they’re not green!
“The stupid pit is very hard to get out.
“The other night, I was having a salmon avocado bowl and I had to stoop to the level of the Shepard.”
The radio host then turned her attention to Shepard growers.
“Okay, I love the farmers. If you’re a Shepard avocado farmer, I love you. But can you please put the energy into something else.
“Get a good greenhouse, invest it all.
“I’ll support you, I’ll give you some money. I’ll do a Go Fund Me for a good greenhouse that can do a year-round Hass.”
Abbie brought her point home by saying: “Discontinue them.”
It is currently Shepard season for avocados in Australia, with the Hass more difficult to source.
Shepards are in season for a limited time, from February to April, while, Hass are available April to January.
Abbie is not alone in her frustration with the low seasonal stock of Hass avocados.
After posting her rant to Instagram, the comments were filled with users agreeing she was “spitting truths”.
“Someone finally said it. Shepard must go!” a comment read.
“I found some Hass avocados at the fruit shop I swear never been happier in my life,” a user wrote.
Other posters supported the humble Shepard.
“A properly ripe Shepard avo is a beautiful experience. They have to be very soft before they’re ready!” one user suggested.
Added another: “Sheps are the best. They last the distance, unlike Hass which goes rotten the minute you purchase them.”
A third user assured: “The secret is that when you think they’re ripe, they’re not actually ripe yet.
“Let them go way past what you’d think is ripe and get a little brown on the top.
“Trust me, it will change your life.”
