Dyson has announced the full specs of the Dyson Zone headphones. With up to 50 hours of advanced noise reduction and faithful audio reproduction, these remarkable headphones also provide air purification, capturing 99% of particulate pollution as small as 0.1 microns.

Announced earlier this year, the Dyson Zone headphones, after five years of research and development, deliver up to 50 hours of ultra-low distortion1, advanced noise cancellation and true full spectrum audio reproduction. The Dyson Zone also captures 99% of particulate pollution as small as 0.1 micron2, while K-Carbon, potassium-enriched carbon filters target the prevalent acidic gases most commonly associated with urban pollution, including NO2 and SO2. .

The Dyson Zone headphones are designed to meet the twin challenges of city noise and air pollution. Powered by advanced lithium-ion batteries and charging via USB-C, the headphones offer 50 hours of audio-only runtime1, or 4 hours of combined purge and audio runtime with a 3-hour charge to 100%.
The Dyson Zone air purifying headphones are the result of Dyson’s 30 years of experience in airflow, filtration and motor technologies and deep knowledge of indoor and outdoor air quality. The compressors in each earcup draw air through the dual-layer filters and project two streams of purified air to the wearer’s nose and mouth, through the non-contact detachable visor. Electrostatic filters capture 99% of particulate pollution as small as 0.1 micron2, while K-Carbon, potassium-enriched carbon filters target the prevalent acidic gases most commonly associated with urban pollution, including NO2 and SO2.
The product is also designed to deliver high-fidelity audio with ultra-low distortion and a wide frequency range for clarity across bass, mids and highs. The Dyson Zone includes an additional microphone for telephony, enabling telephone calls, voice recording and voice control. The telephony microphone is combined with the feed forward ANC microphone to provide dual microphone beamforming. Beamforming improves the clarity of speech transmission by combining the signals from each microphone in such a way that the system can suppress noise from behind and to the side of the wearer.

Dyson’s approach to audio engineering
The Dyson Zone headphones offer a striking listening experience. Many audio developers rely on a “golden listener,” where a trained person determines how “good” sounds. This has become common practice in the audio industry. Dyson engineers took a more scientific approach, guided by audio research and validation of the resulting specification targets with extensive user testing.

Designed for ultra-low distortion: The speaker driver and electronics, mechanical system, materials and acoustics are carefully designed to minimize distortion. The output of the driver is further smoothed by intelligent signal processing 48,000 times per second, which, in combination with the noise reduction, neutralizes harmonic distortion to inaudible levels across the full frequency range (0.08% @ 94 dB @ 1 kHz).
Advanced noise reduction: 11 microphones in the product. The Dyson Zone ANC system uses eight microphones to monitor ambient noise 384,000 times per second. The Dyson Zone offers up to 38 dB of noise reduction from 20 Hz to 20 kHz.
Full spectrum audio: The Dyson Zone goes beyond the audible to reproduce frequencies from 6 Hz – 21 kHz, so that every note or word is audible. It’s harder for audio reproduction to be accurate at the extremes of the speaker’s frequency range, so by going beyond human hearing, the Dyson Zone achieves more clarity across the audible part of the spectrum. Such a wide frequency range is due to the electro-acoustic technical system engineering and basic components: 40 mm, 16 ohm and neodymium speaker drivers are the heart of the audio system.
Scientifically tuned to hear more details: Driven by scientific statistics and validated by extensive user testing, Dyson engineers identified the specification that provides the most clarity and detail across the entire audio spectrum. Dyson has created an EQ setting that optimizes the frequency curve for clear, clean audio across the full audible frequency range to deliver a high-fidelity audio experience.
Listen in comfortt: No two heads are the same, and this variation affects many elements of comfort and audio performance, including the clamping force of the headband, the geometry and materials of the detachable visor, the adjustability of the product, and much more. The ear cushions are purposefully flatter than conventional ear cushions for both passive attenuation and comfort, and the cushions are angled to align with the ear for optimum comfort.
Telephony: Dual microphone beamforming and noise reduction technology enable clear voice calls, voice recording and voice control.

High-level filtration in real conditions
Globally, an average of 190 million people travel by metro, exposing passengers to a mix of pollutants such as particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), which can reach levels higher than at street level in some cities.
Tackling air pollution in cities is a specific task, whether you commute to work, travel abroad or traverse the city in which you live. The filtration system and air supply mechanism in the Dyson Zone are specifically designed to tackle such tasks. Precision-engineered compressors, running at up to 9,750 rpm, draw air through the dual-layer filters. The negatively charged electrostatic filter media captures ultra-fine particles, such as allergens, and particles from sources such as brake dust, industrial combustion, and construction, up to 99% efficiency for particles as small as 0.1 microns2. These particles are of paramount importance to health authorities and investment continues to be made in research into their long-term effect on health. A second layer, K-Carbon, is a potassium-enriched carbon layer that captures specific city gas pollutants such as NO2, SO2 and O3, as well as unpleasant city odours, such as construction fumes, sewage or stale air in metro systems. Filters last up to 12 months depending on geographic location.

Sensor, connectivity and app development
NO2 is one of the most common gaseous pollutants in cities, a by-product of combustion, with sources including traffic and construction. In addition to other acidic gases such as SO2, the potassium-enriched carbon filters in the Dyson Zone specifically target these acidic gases to meet the challenges of city air. A built-in sensor monitors the air for NO2 levels and tracks them live via the MyDyson app, alongside real-time ambient noise levels. Like Dyson home air purifiers, the Dyson Zone provides actionable, understandable information about the user’s environment to encourage healthier habits. A built-in accelerometer monitors user activity and adjusts the purified airflow appropriately in automatic mode with the visor attached. Head sensing puts the product in standby mode when not being worn, and flipping down the detachable visor activates conversation mode, stopping purging and pausing music, intelligently saving battery life optimized.
The MyDyson app can also be used to control the Dyson Zone, adjust the airflow rate and noise canceling mode and adjust the audio equalization to your preference, choosing from three modes: Dyson EQ (amplified), Bass Boost (bassy) and Neutral (flatter response curve). In the MyDyson app you can opt in to the loudness limit in accordance with hearing health guidelines.
The Dyson Zone noise-cancelling air-purifying headphones have been developed by teams in the UK, Singapore, Malaysia and China, with a particular focus on software on the campuses in South East Asia.

Problem of urban pollution
More than half of the world’s population lives in cities. This is expected to be 7 in 10 by 20503. As the urban population grows, so does the associated infrastructure – transport, construction, traffic – all of which impact the environment we live in, polluting the air and creating noise.

• An estimated 90 percent of public transit users in New York City are exposed to levels that exceed the recommended decibel limit4. In the EU, noise pollution affects 1 in 5 citizens5.

Price and availability
The Dyson Zone will be on sale from January 2023 in China and March in the US, UK, Hong Kong SAR and Singapore. The expectation is that the Dyson Zone will not be available for sale in the Netherlands until after the summer and may not be until early 2024. The price is not yet known.
