Community responds after teenager is killed in Saturday night shooting

ROANOKE, Va (WFXR) — The community is feeling the effects after a teenager lost his life to gun violence in NW Roanoke on the night of Saturday, September 3.

Police responded to reports of several gunshots around 7:45 p.m. and they say the victim was pronounced dead on the scene. It happened on the 1000 block of Palm Avenue, and one neighbor says he wasn’t even aware it was gunfire at first.

“Me and my daughters were sitting on my deck, we were just watching tv and we just thought it was firecrackers and it was just like pop pop pop pop….” said the one neighbor.

While there is little information about what led up to the shooting, members of the community are heartbroken to see another person lose their life to gun violence.

“Any time a young person dies, whatever the cause, it’s devastating,” said Roanoke City Councilman Joe Cobb.

Councilman Cobb says that the senseless gun violence needs to stop and that the tragic death of a teenager in the community is further evidence of that. He says the increase in accessibility and access to firearms — can lead to tragedy when landing in the wrong hands.

“It is about guns ending up in the hands of people who don’t know how to use them, or know how to use them very well, and are using them for violent means,” said Cobb.

Cobb says he believes in uncertain times, it is imperative that the community works together and supports one another, in order to help prevent future tragic incidents from occurring.

“That’s the value of that safety net we call community where we can be there for each other and do everything we can to help prevent something like this from happening again,” said Cobb.

In addition, Cobb says there are resources available for those looking to receive training in gun violence prevention, as well as resources to offer support to families and community members who may have been impacted by devastating events.

The identity of the teenager has not yet been released, and this is an ongoing homicide investigation. Police are asking if you do have any information on the case, to contact Roanoke Police Department immediately.
